about jekyll
in general
(TW for discussion of murder and suicide in this bio paragraph.)
henry jekyll is a kind and gentle victorian individual unfortunately plagued by guilt from his 'secret evil nature*', as well as a desire to cure this evil, not just in himself but in others as well. this leads him to create a potion that even he has no idea what it will do. he drinks it down, and transforms his appearance completely. (the fgo hyde design doesn't really capture this very well!) he names this alter ego edward hyde and immediately goes out to do... i dunno actually, it's pretty vague. the things we're aware of are primarily violent. besides that, probably just general debauchery? anyway, jekyll takes the potion again and again, night after night, until one day he says enough is enough and quits cold turkey. after about a month of being normal again, he relapses and has a night out as hyde yet again. he says okay, i'm done for real. unfortunately, jekyll begins transforming into hyde involuntarily, and can only change back by taking the potion again, and that batch of potion is going fast AND he can't seem to recreate the formula in just the right way. it's around this time that hyde kills a guy. (fate deviates here and says MANY people are murdered, as well as that hyde is slowly becoming more bestial as the transformations continue, werewolf style) eventually he's stuck as hyde and locks himself in his laboratory, hiding out for a while until they come kicking down his door. rather than be executed for his crimes, hyde takes his own life. i hope you liked my book report.
*i think he's gay. queer readings of the strange case are extremely common, as the book itself intentionally leaves this concept of jekyll's secret inner life before hyde extremely vague.
in fate
henry jekyll and hyde, in fate, are a character originally from the light novel/audio drama/manga series titled fate/prototype: fragments of sky silver. as a heroic spirit based (quite loosely...) on the titular classic novella character, he fights with his master tatsumi kitano in the 1991 tokyo holy grail war. he also makes an appearance in the far more popular fate installment fate/grand order, a mobile gacha game. in this game he is a low-rarity unit famous for being TERRIBLE! his kit is broken in a bad way, but despite this i have leveled him to 120 and i bring him to just about every fight.
